Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) on Wednesday added to its Blueprint mobile development platform tools for building standalone applications for Java, Windows Mobile, and Symbian smartphones.
In addition, Yahoo added tools for creating mobile Web sites accessible via an HTML or xHTML mobile browser. The new tools were released as developer previews.
In introducing the software, Yahoo said it was attacking the problems that developers have in creating applications that can run on multiple mobile operating systems without extensive recoding.
"Now with one click, you can write once and have mobile services run across a critical mass of devices and operating systems, potentially reaching millions of users," Marco Boerries, executive VP of Yahoo Connected Life, said in a statement.
Yahoo also said its using Blueprint internally to develop applications for Apple's iPhone, and is in discussion with the computer maker on how to make the development platform available to other developers interested in using it to make iPhone software.
Yahoo rolled out an iPhone application Wednesday at that CTIA conference in San Francisco. The OneConnect application enables users to manage their mobile messaging and social networking contacts with one interface. In essence, it creates a socially connected address book.
Before the addition of the new tools, Blueprint was primarily used in creating widgets for Yahoo's flagship mobile application Yahoo Go. Blueprint includes a full software development kit for third-party developers.
In trying to spread adoption of the platform, Yahoo has partnered with Web development houses Crisp Wireless, M.Net, and Netbiscuits, which have agreed to offer their clients the option of having their mobile Web applications build on Blueprint.
